Rybarikova, Tanasugarn advance in Birmingham

06/07/2010 - Birmingham, England (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Tenth-seeded reigning champion Magdalena Rybarikova and Thai veteran Tamarine Tanasugarn were among Monday's winners at the $220,000 Aegon Classic, a grass-court Wimbledon tune-up.

Rybarikova was trailing Regina Kulikova 5-7, 3-2 when the Russian retired with a lower back injury, while the 14th-seeded Tanasugarn trounced American Lilia Osterloh 6-2, 6-2 at Edgbaston Priory Club. The 33-year-old Tanasugarn, who plays some of her best tennis on grass, was a runner-up here 10 years ago.

The 21-year-old Rybarikova beat Chinese Li Na to capture her first-ever WTA Tour title here a year ago. Li is this week's top seed.

In other matches involving seeds, No. 13 German Angelique Kerber held off Japan's Misaki Doi 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 and New Zealand's Marina Erakovic took out 11th-seeded Hungarian Melinda Czink 7-5, 6-4.

Indian Sania Mirza handled Taipei's Yung-Jan Chan 6-1, 6-4, while American Bethanie Mattek-Sands overcame Italian Alberta Brianti 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 and American Shenay Perry topped Brit Naomi Broady 6-4, 6-4. Mirza will face Tanasugarn in the round of 32, while Mattek-Sands should have her hands full with former world No. 1 and former Wimbledon champion Maria Sharapova, this week's second seed. The three-time Grand Slam event champion Sharapova was the Birmingham titlist in 2004 and 2005 and the runner-up in 2007.

Additional Day-1 wins came for Britain's Laura Robson, Bulgarian Sesil Karatantcheva, Russians Anna Chakvetadze, Ekaterina Makarova and Alla Kudryavtseva, Portugal's Michelle Larcher de Brito, Aussies Jarmila Groth and Anastasia Rodionova, Croat Mirjana Lucic, and American Alison Riske.
