06/07/2010 - Berkshire, England (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - European Ryder Cup captain Colin Montgomerie fired an eight-under 62 on Monday to qualify for his 21st consecutive British Open.
Montgomerie matched the 18-hole scoring record on Sunningdale's New course, overcoming a middling 69 on the Old course to secure one of the 10 qualifying spots available.
The British Open will be held from July 15-18 on the Old Course at St. Andrews, where Montgomerie made his Open Championship debut in 1990. He finished second to Tiger Woods on the Old Course in 2005.
"It's a special place, no question," Montgomerie said, "and I'm just glad the opportunity has been taken."
Monday's qualifier was won by Ireland's Shane Lowry, who opened with a 62 on the easier Old course at Sunningdale and closed with a 67 on the New course to post an 11-under 129.
Lowry is best-known for becoming the third amateur in European Tour history to win an event when he captured the 2009 Irish Open.
Montgomerie tied for second place with Andrew Coltart (66-65) at nine-under 131.
Also earning spots in the field were Gareth Maybin, Thomas Bjorn, Jose Manuel Lara, Tano Goya, Ignacio Garrido, Bradley Dredge and Marcel Siem.
Siem, the 54-hole leader at last week's Wales Open, clinched the 10th spot in a six-way playoff when he birdied the first hole.
Darren Clarke was among the players who did not earn a spot through the Sunningdale qualifier.
